We share a variety of information and perspectives on Japanese crafts, including exhibition information and interviews.
NEXTRAD is a team formed by 13 people of young entrepreneurs and successors of porcelain manufacturing companies in Arita and Imari.
Their mission is to address various issues currently faced by the Arita ware industry and actively engage in activities to ensure that Arita ware, with over 400 years of history, is connected to the future as a sustainable industry.
Following last year’s event, NEXTRAD is organizing the open studio and interactive exhibition event, “Go Forward 2023” this autumn, scheduled for November 17 and 18, 2023. In the exhibition, manufacturers will explain the craftsmanship of Arita ware based on keywords with the initial letter “P” (Porcelain / Process / Polyethism / Professionalism / Peculiarity / Planning / Prototype / Production / Pricing / Path / Promotion / Purchaser / Partnership / Passion). In addition to the exhibition, there will be open studio events where visitors can observe the manufacturing process which is typically not accessible to the public. Workshops will also be available for experiencing the unique techniques of each kiln, such as “ikomi (mold casting),” “itchin (a drawing method using slip),” and “tensha (transfer printing).”
The event provides a valuable opportunity to learn about Arita ware directly from the craftsmen who are dedicated to their craft every day. We highly recommend visiting Arita to feel their enthusiasm for shaping the region’s future.
